Abstract

The Extra High Voltage Transmission Line (EHV-TL) plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuity and stability of long-distance electric power systems. Nevertheless, a major operational challenge of EHV-TL lies in the variation of voltage profiles along the transmission line, which may result in overvoltage or under voltage conditions, particularly during light load scenarios and with exceptionally long transmission distances. This research investigates the behavior of voltage profiles on EHV-TL in relation to varying levels of capacitive and inductive compensation. The analysis is conducted through simulations of a 500 kV transmission system spanning 300 kilometers, using MATLAB software. The compensation degree is varied from 0% to 100% to assess its influence on voltage stability. The results indicate that optimal reactive compensation significantly enhances voltage profile stability and mitigates the risk of overvoltage. The ideal range of compensation is identified between 60% and 80%, depending on the load conditions, with a voltage regulation setting of 0.97789% shown to improve system stability. Conversely, compensation levels exceeding 80% may result in overcompensation and lead to system imbalance.
