Journal History
Founding and Early Development (2016)
Jurnal Ilmiah Akuntansi Indonesia (JIAI) was established and first published in April 2016 by the Faculty of Economics and Business (Fakultas Ekonomi dan Bisnis), Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember, Indonesia. The journal was founded in response to the growing need for a dedicated academic publication platform within the field of accounting science, particularly to accommodate research outputs from academics, practitioners, and researchers across Indonesia. Since its inception, JIAI has been published periodically and managed through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, hosted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember.
The journal was established with a commitment to disseminating high-quality, peer-reviewed research covering a broad spectrum of accounting disciplines, including financial accounting, management accounting, auditing, public sector accounting, and sharia accounting, among others. From its earliest issues, JIAI adopted a double-blind peer review process to ensure academic rigor and scholarly integrity in all published works.
First National Accreditation — SINTA 5 (2018)
A significant milestone in JIAI’s development was achieved in 2018, when the journal received its first national accreditation from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemdikbudristek) through the Science and Technology Index (SINTA) system. JIAI was accredited at SINTA 5 — a formal recognition of the journal’s compliance with national standards of academic publication quality. This accreditation marked the beginning of JIAI’s journey toward greater visibility and credibility within the Indonesian academic community, encouraging higher submission volumes from researchers across the country.
The SINTA 5 accreditation served as a catalyst for the editorial board to further strengthen the journal’s internal processes, including more systematic editorial workflow management, stricter plagiarism screening, and the enhancement of reviewer recruitment from a broader network of accounting academics.
Accreditation Upgrade — SINTA 4 (2022)
Building on sustained improvements in editorial quality, manuscript diversity, and citation growth, JIAI successfully achieved an accreditation upgrade to SINTA 4 in 2022. This elevation reflected the journal’s consistent progress in meeting higher benchmarks set by the national accreditation assessment system, including improvements in the scientific quality of published articles, the diversity of contributing authors’ institutional affiliations, and the journal’s overall editorial management standards.
The SINTA 4 status positioned JIAI as a more competitive and recognized publication platform at the national level, attracting submissions from a wider range of institutions and increasing the journal’s contribution to the development of accounting scholarship in Indonesia.
Digital Modernization and Platform Migration (2025)
In 2025, JIAI undertook a significant technical upgrade by migrating its editorial and publication management system from Open Journal Systems version 2 (OJS 2) to the more advanced Open Journal Systems version 3 (OJS 3). This migration represented a major step forward in the journal’s digital infrastructure, providing a more modern, user-friendly interface for authors, reviewers, and readers alike.
The journal’s official platform is now accessible at:

The previous platform at https://jurnal.unmuhjember.ac.id/index.php/JIAI/index remains accessible as an archival reference for issues published prior to the migration. The transition to OJS 3 enabled JIAI to adopt enhanced features, including improved metadata management, better integration with indexing databases, and stronger support for COPE-aligned editorial workflows.
Looking Forward
With nearly a decade of continuous publication, JIAI remains committed to its founding mission of advancing accounting knowledge and providing a rigorous, accessible, and ethically governed publication venue for the Indonesian and international accounting research community. The editorial board continues to pursue quality improvements aligned with international publication standards, with the long-term aspiration of achieving higher SINTA accreditation tiers and expanded indexation in recognized international databases.
