Authorship Criteria

AGRITROP: Journal of Agricultural Sciences recognizes authorship as an important responsibility that reflects significant intellectual contributions to scientific research and publication. Authorship should be based on meaningful contributions to the research process, manuscript preparation, accountability, and responsibility for the published work.

The journal follows internationally recognized authorship principles recommended by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which emphasizes that authorship should reflect genuine contributions to scholarly work and that all listed authors should take responsibility for the content of the publication. COPE, Authorship and Contributorship .

Contributor Recognition

AGRITROP also recommends the use of the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) to provide transparency regarding individual contributions and to clarify the specific roles performed by each author during the research and publication process. CRediT, Contributor Roles Taxonomy .

1 Criteria for Authorship

To qualify as an author of an AGRITROP manuscript, an individual should have made substantial contributions to the research and should participate actively in the preparation and approval of the final manuscript.

Authors should meet the following criteria:
  1. Substantial contribution to the research, including contributions to one or more of the following:
    • Conception or design of the research;
    • Development of research methodology;
    • Acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data;
    • Development of experimental procedures or research approaches.
  2. Contribution to manuscript preparation, including:
    • Writing the initial manuscript draft;
    • Critically revising the manuscript for important intellectual content;
    • Providing scientific interpretation and improvements.
  3. Approval of the final version of the manuscript before submission and agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work.
  4. Responsibility for research integrity, including responding appropriately to questions regarding accuracy, methodology, ethical compliance, and scientific validity.

COPE emphasizes that authorship should not be granted solely based on position, institutional authority, supervision, funding acquisition, or administrative support without significant intellectual contribution to the research and manuscript. COPE, Discussion Document: Authorship .

2 Contributor Roles Using CRediT Taxonomy

AGRITROP encourages authors to provide an Author Contribution Statement using the CRediT taxonomy.

The CRediT system defines standardized contributor roles to improve transparency and recognition of individual contributions in scholarly publications. CRediT, Contributor Roles Taxonomy .

Author Contribution Roles
Conceptualization Development of research ideas, objectives, and hypotheses.
Methodology Development of research methods and experimental design.
Software Development or application of software tools.
Validation Verification of research methods and results.
Formal Analysis Statistical analysis and interpretation of data.
Investigation Conducting experiments and data collection.
Resources Provision of materials, samples, or research resources.
Data Curation Organization and management of research data.
Writing: Original Draft Preparation Preparation of the initial manuscript.
Writing: Review and Editing Critical revision and improvement of the manuscript.
Visualization Preparation of figures, tables, and graphical presentations.
Supervision Research oversight and leadership.
Project Administration Management and coordination of research activities.
Funding Acquisition Obtaining financial support for the research.
Example of Author Contribution Statement

Author Contributions: Conceptualization: A.A. and B.B.; Methodology: A.A.; Investigation: A.A. and C.C.; Data Analysis: B.B.; Writing: Original Draft Preparation: A.A.; Writing: Review and Editing: All authors. All authors have read and approved the final manuscript.

Corresponding Author Responsibilities

The corresponding author serves as the primary contact between the journal and the authors during submission, review, and publication processes.

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that:
  • All listed authors meet authorship criteria;
  • All authors approve the submitted manuscript;
  • Author contribution information is accurate;
  • All required declarations are completed, including funding, conflict of interest, and ethical statements;
  • All authors are informed about manuscript revisions and editorial decisions.

The corresponding author does not automatically receive greater authorship credit than other authors unless their contribution justifies such recognition.

Changes in Authorship

Any changes to authorship after manuscript submission must be requested formally and approved by all authors.

Addition of authors
Removal of authors
Changes in author order

Requests for authorship changes must include a clear explanation and written confirmation from all affected authors.

AGRITROP will not approve authorship changes without appropriate justification and agreement from all authors involved.

COPE recommends that journals establish clear procedures for authorship changes and ensure that all authors agree before modifications are made. COPE, Authorship and Contributorship .

Guest, Gift, and Ghost Authorship

AGRITROP does not permit inappropriate authorship practices, including:

Guest Authorship
Adding individuals as authors who have not made substantial contributions to the research or manuscript.
Gift Authorship
Including individuals because of their position, reputation, seniority, institutional authority, or personal relationship without meaningful contribution.
Ghost Authorship
Excluding individuals who made substantial contributions to the research or manuscript.

All authors listed on an AGRITROP manuscript must have made genuine contributions and accept responsibility for the published work.

COPE identifies inappropriate authorship practices as violations of publication ethics because they misrepresent contributions and accountability in scholarly publishing. COPE, Authorship and Contributorship .

Acknowledged Contributors

Individuals who contributed to the research but do not meet authorship criteria should be recognized in the Acknowledgements section.

Examples include:
  • Technical assistance;
  • Administrative support;
  • Language editing;
  • Data collection assistance;
  • General supervision without intellectual contribution.

Acknowledgement does not replace authorship when substantial intellectual contributions have been made.

Artificial Intelligence and Authorship

AGRITROP does not consider artificial intelligence tools, including generative AI systems, as authors.

AI tools cannot fulfill authorship responsibilities because they cannot:

  • Take responsibility for published content;
  • Approve the final manuscript;
  • Declare conflicts of interest;
  • Respond to ethical concerns regarding the research.

Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and ethical compliance of manuscripts prepared with AI assistance. COPE, Authorship and AI Tools .

Any use of AI tools during manuscript preparation must be disclosed according to the journal’s Artificial Intelligence Use Disclosure Policy.

Author Accountability

All authors are collectively responsible for the integrity of the published research.

Authors must ensure that:
  • Data and results are accurately reported;
  • Sources are appropriately acknowledged;
  • Ethical standards have been followed;
  • Potential errors are promptly communicated to the journal;
  • Questions regarding research integrity are addressed appropriately.

AGRITROP expects authors to maintain transparency, accountability, and responsible conduct throughout the publication process.
