Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of overthinking on the manifestation of generalized anxiety disorder in adolescents and young adults through a comprehensive literature review. Online searches were conducted across Google Scholar, ELSEVIER, and ScienceDirect databases using relevant keywords. Following a screening process based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 18 scientific articles published between 2020 and 2026 were selected and analyzed using content analysis with a comparative approach. The synthesis of findings indicates that rumination and Repetitive Negative Thinking (RNT) serve as maladaptive cognitive elements that significantly exacerbate anxiety conditions through mechanisms involving thought distortion and low tolerance for uncertainty. Internal factors such as self-efficacy and self-esteem and external factors social and familial pressures contribute to triggering these behaviors. Various interventions including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), relaxation techniques, and the strengthening of spiritual or religious aspects have proven effective in reducing anxiety symptoms.
